Car Scrappage Scheme Extended
The government car scrappage scheme was due to finish in February but will now run until the end of March, although no additional funds will be provided. A total of £400m was put into the scheme by government which started in May 2009 with a limit of 400,000 vehicles that can be scrapped. According to the government some 330,000 cars have been ordered under the scheme.
Car Production Fell By 31% in 2009 Compared With Previous Year
According to the Society of Motoring Manufacturers (SMMT), car production was down by 31% in 2009 with more than three quarters of which were exported. Car companies have cut back throughout the year on manufacturing as consumer demand decreased. Commercial vehicle output rose in December for the first time in 17 months, rising 15.6%.
Smaller Manufacturers’ Orders Expected to Stabilise
According to the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) quarterly SME Trends Survey firms expect order books to stabilise in the next quarter despite the decreased demand for goods made by the UK’s small and medium sized manufacturers.
